„Cinema of observation” by Tadeusz Sobolewski

A hundred years ago, Henri Bergson wrote that time is open; Tadeusz Sobolewski, cinema critic and historian, adds: Film is the only art form enabling us to see and comprehend that. At the 8th Two Riversides Sobolewski will participate in a special “Cinema lesson” on the issue of time in film.

Our guest tells us: There is a type of film called “cinema of observation,” as opposed to “action cinema.” An example of that is Rossellini’s “Journey to Italy,” which was screened at Two Riversides, as well as films by Antonioni, Resnais, Has. In his lecture Sobolewski will be talking about those magical momemts when seemingly nothing happens, but at the same time so much changes. Together we will watch fragments of Ozu’s “Tokyo story,” Varda’s “Cléo from 5 to 7,” Olmi’s “The legend of the holy drinker,” and Fellini’s “Nights of Cabiria.” In Tadeusz Sobolewski’s interpretation, those films show people in critical situations, feeling that their life perspective is closing on them. But then rescue comes.

Information about the next “Cinema lessons” in Kazimierz Dolny will be available soon.
