OPENING | CLOSING GALA

Films chosen at European festivals especially with Polish viewers in mind. Each year, during the opening and closing gala of Two Riversides Film and Art Festival we present films which première in Poland.

WORLD UNDER CANVAS

Films selected at the most important festivals round the world: Venice, San Sebastian, Rotterdam, Berlin, Cannes, Transilvania, Riga, Portoroz, Ljubljana, Bratislava – and the ones held in Poland.

IN THE SHORT RUN

A review of new, often premiere short-length films. This section comprises of awarded shorts from international festivals and the best short, professional Polish films from the previous season. Among them are many awarded at international festivals. The section shows the diversity and richness of shorts.

INDEPENDENT SHORT FILMS COMPETITION

Show yourself in Kazimierz Dolny and Janowiec nad Wisłą. We are waiting for your films until the 31th of May 2014. The main prize of the ISFC is 5000 PLN. There are also two additional prizes: 3000 and 2000 PLN.

DIRECTOR RETROSPECTIVE | JAN TROELL

Jan Troell is considered to be the perfect auteur, as not only does he write scripts for his films, but he also shoots and edits them.

DIRECTOR RETROSPECTIVE | MAŁGORZATA SZUMOWSKA

She breaks the taboo, does not fear to ask difficult questions, does not judge poeple’s behaviour but tries to understand it. We will see the retrospective of Małgorzata Szumowska’s directorial work at the 8th Two Riversides Festival.

MINI-RETROSPECTIVE | LINA WERTMÜLLER

There are few female directors as important for the history of cinema as Lina Wertmüller. The Italian artist was the first woman to be nominated for an Academy Award for best directing.

MINI-RETROSPECTIVE | PIRJO HONKASALO

If someone, basing on the sports term “total football,” were to coin the “total filmmaker” (which would describe an author engaged in each and every aspect of the filmmaking craft), then Pirjo Honkasalo would surely serve as an excellent example of such an artist.

AND GOD CREATED ACTOR | ANDRZEJ CHYRA

This year’s central figure of “And God Created Actor” supposedly has the most unsettling blue eyes in Polish cinema. Eyes that are the window to the soul, the man, and the artist.

MUSIC – MY LOVE

We present music films and films about music, sometimes we also screen concert footage as well. A holiday of music and film together with a festival-opening event. During Two Riversides we want to underline the mutual entanglement of and inspirations behind film and music art.

GREAT CINEMA ON THE SMALL MARKET SQUARE

Shows which extensively promote outstanding film productions. Wonderful pictures which were only distributed in a few copies. This is our idea for what is worth saving from the last season.

CINEMA LESSON

„Cinema Lesson – Confession of a Filmmaker” is a particular form of our special guests’ meeting with the festival audience. The artists talk about their fascination with art, artistic sins and craft secrets.

THE THEATRES OF TADEUSZ RÓŻEWICZ

The dramas by Tadeusz Rózewicz disturb, haunt, upset. It is a world that spilled out of its boundaries – disordered, inconsistent, made up of newspaper fragments, television programs, street conversations. It is not only an excellent depiction of reality, but also a poignant struggle with a constant lack – a lack of communication, a common language, true feelings, and, first and foremost, a lack of God.

TELEVISION THEATRE

During Two Riversides we want to popularise this art form, which, in accordance with the idea behind the festival, is based on the co-existence of different fields of art. Television theatre has been shaping Polish culture since the beginning of its existence, being a unique phenomenon on the artistic map of the world. There is a great need to preserve and promote this kind of creative activity.

THE AUDIENCE POLL

At the Two Riversides the only jury is the audience. Films which take part in the Poll are ones from the World Under Canvas and feature film premieres from other sections produced in 2013 and 2014.

CINEMA AROUND THE CORNER

Cinemas within the Cinema Round the Corner network offer the most important amenities of commercial cinemas such as high quality of sound and image. However, they are not limited by a fixed repertoire, lack of access to many movies, and short release period after which a movie disappears forever from the screens.

KIDS BLOCK

With the youngest cinema-lovers in mind, we have planned screenings of films and animated stories in cooperation with “Kino za Rogiem” („Cinema around the Corner”) and TVP ABC. As part of this program we will also show “Bella and Sebastian,” which will be presented in the “World Under Canvas” section.

CONCERTS

Presentation of composers and performers of classical, jazz, alternative music. The undermining assumption of our music program is connecting traditional and innovative music styles. At the same time, thinking about shaping the Polish scene, we want to promote young musicians who set the main trends of contemporary scene.

EXHIBITIONS

We organise exhibitions of regional artists in cooperation with the Vistula Museum and local galleries. The series is to animate and promote the local artistic environment and to shape the image of the region as a place which is characterised by intensive creative activities.

MEETINGS

Meetings with remarkable creators of film, art and literature from around the world. The festival town and the fact that the it takes place in the open air lets our audience mix holidays with broadening their knowledge and making international connections.

TWO RIVERSIDES OF LITERATURE

A series of meetings with renowned Polish authors, nominees, and winners of the most important awards in the field of literature. The topic of this year’s edition is how memory works, and how it is reflected in literature. The meetings with the authors take place at the House of Maria and Jerzy Kuncewicz, which which came to be as a meeting place for writers and intellectuals.
