Pirjo Honkasalo leaves no doubt about who is responsible for the success of her films – usually, she is not only the director, but also the screenwriter, cinematographer, and the editor. As part of Pirjo’s retrospective at Two Riversides we will see five films by this Finnish author.
At the festival we will present a trilogy of the holy and the devilish. It includes “Mysterion,” “Tanjuska and the 7 Devils,” and “Atman,” films that tell stories of individuals or small communities, and simultaneously portray the spiritual state of the modern world. In “The 3 Rooms of Melancholia” the director shifts her attention from religion to war, describing the Russian-Chechen conflict. The retrospective will close with “Concrete Night,” an adaptation of the novel by famous Finnish author Pirkko Saisio. In Finland the film was announced the best of 2013 and awarded with six Jussi prizes.
