Second place goes to Julia Rogowska and Magdalena Załęcka’s “Cold Feet,” and third – to Mateusz Głowacki’s “Survey About Men.”

This year the films were evaluated by an independent 15-piece jury comprised of audience members chosen at random and unassociated with the film industry. Maryla Jorsz, Two Riversides program manager, says: “We try to select unusual films and find something unique in each and every one of them. This is why, inter alia, there is so much variety.” The jurors evaluated a total of 61 productions this year.

It was “Human Capital,” and not “The Great Beauty,” that ended up as the grand winner of this year’s David di Donatello awards (the Italian counterpart of the Academy Awards). Awarded with seven prizes, Paolo Virzi’s film will be screened during the Festival’s closing gala. The film is an excellent mixture of thriller and film noir, telling the story of two parties involved in a car accident. “Human Capital” will be having its premiere at Two Riversides.

Faith is dead. Hope is dead. Joy is dead. Only one boy starts questioning what he has been taught. The protagonist of “Days of Gray” doesn’t want to become a hunter, one like his father, and decides to finish with killing people. The film by Ani Simon-Kennedy will be screened for the first time in Poland at Two Riversides.

The film portrait of Jacek Kaczmarski is another film to see on Saturday. As part of the “Music – my love” section we will be paying homage to the outstanding poet and songwriter. After the screening of the documentary “Bard” we will hold a meeting with its director, Katarzyna Kościelak.

When a passionate diver suffers stroke-induced paralysis, his world shifts 180 degrees. He is kept alive by his beloved partner and the dream to someday dive deep underwater again. At Two Riversides you will not only have the chance to see the documentary “Deep Love,” but also talk with its director, Jan Matuszyński.

“The Wind Rises,” “Bella and Sebastian,” and “The Captive” – this is what Monolith Films offers at this year’s Two Riversides. The Kazimierz audience will have the opportunity to see these film long before their theatrical releases.

Where else outside of film can acting skills come in handy? “Heavy Mental,” the feature-length debut of Sebastian Buttny, is an intimate story of an unemployed actor who accepts the task to seduce a certain girl. After the screening, the film’s director will personally meet with the Kazimierz audience.

“The Wind Rises” is the Japanese candidate for this year’s Academy Awards. It is the latest work of Hayao Miyazaki, creator of the legendary Studio Ghibli. The film tells the story of a boy who made his dreams come true. Jiro Horikoshi, who had been dreaming of flying since his earliest years, has become an airplane constructor famous throughout Asia. His Mitsubishi Zero fighter planes were used by the kamikaze at Pearl Harbor. The animated film received acclaim from critics all over the world, and it will be available in Polish cinemas from August 29th.

“Bella and Sebastian” is a film adaptation of a story about the extraordinary friendship between a boy and a dog. The film has already enthralled 5 million viewers throughout Europe. A mysterious beast roams near a village in the Alps. The wild animal decimates the villagers’ herds of sheep. One day during a stroll, eight-year-old Sebastian stumbles upon a stray shepherd dog. They become friends, and the boy cannot believe that the grown-ups blame beautiful Bella for the attacks on their homesteads. Sebastian decides to prove her innocence. The film will be shown in cinemas across the country from November 7th.

“The Captive” is a psychological thriller directed by Atom Egoyan, and has been nominated for a Palme d’Or at this year’s Cannes festival. The director exposes the connections between the victim, the family, the perpetrator, and the investigators. The film is a very thorough analysis of the influence that a kidnapping exerts on the protagonists’ relations. Ryan Reynolds plays the role of the father of the kidnapped child. The screening in Kazimierz is a unique opportunity to see the film on the big screen, as it will not enter Polish cinemas.

“At long last Redmond Barry became a gentleman – and that was his tragedy” – such was the tagline fo Stanley Kubrick’s “Barry Lyndon.” The story of a fictional 18th-century rogue is probably one of the most beautifully made costume dramas. As part of the “Stanley Kubrick” exhibition in Cracow, Kazimierz will hold a screening of the monumental, four times Oscar-winning picture.

Benedikt Erlingsson will be coming to Kazimierz Dolny in the afternoon. In his feature-lenght debut he carries on the wonderful legacy of Fridrik Thor Fridriksson, presenting an emotional family story set deep in Nordic landscapes. The director will personally invite the Two Riversides audience to the Polish premiere of “Of Horses and Men.”

We will also go on an extraordinary journey to the Romany world. In the evening, Perła Cinema will screen “Papusza,” and before that composer Jan Kanty Pawluśkiewicz, this year’s Two Riversides guest, will talk about the film’s score in “Cinema Lesson.” Today, the festival also features the premiere screening of Daniel Ribeiro’s “The Way He Looks,” a Brazilian drama about a blind teenager, who is struggling to free himself from his overprotective mother.

Literature-lovers will meet with Małgorzata Potocka and Janusz Rudnicki today. In the Empik Store, the director and actress will talk about her relationship with Grzegorz Ciechowski, described in her famous book “Obywatel i Małgorzata.” Janusz Rudnicki, on the other hand, will elaborate on the making of his grotesque, often surreal stories.

After thirteen years, Jerzy Kucia, one of the most important makers of international animated artistic cinema, returns with a new film. At the I Love Cinema Café you will have the opportunity to talk with the master about his “Fugue for Cello, Trumpet and Landscape.”

The day will be concluded with the band Miąższ in concert. Their music relies on catchiness and Polish lyrics, and making use of traditional acoustic instruments. In their own words: “Miąższ is really cheesy.” Perhaps, but we sure love that cheese!
